As a makeup artist, one of the most common questions I hear is:“Will a Sunscreen compromise my makeup?”

The short answer is no, not when you’re using the right formula. In fact, a great SPF can actually improve how your makeup sits and wears throughout the day.

The new Fade Out SPF50+ Sunscreen & Primers are a great example of how skincare and makeup can work together seamlessly. These formulas combine high-level sun protection,complexion-supporting skincare and a smoothing primer base, which means they slot perfectly into a makeup routine while protecting your skin at the same time.

For me, daily SPF is non-negotiable,both professionally and personally. Protecting the skin is one of the most important steps for not only ageing but maintaining a smooth, radiant canvas for makeup.

Why SPF Matters for Makeup

Advanced Range

Healthy skin always makes makeup look better. Sun exposure can contribute to uneven tone, pigmentation and premature ageing, all of which affect how foundation and concealer sit on the skin.

Using SPF daily helps maintain the clarity and brightness of your complexion over time, which means you often need less coverage and fewer corrective products in the long run.

What I particularly love about the Fade Out SPF formulas is that they work as a hybrid skincare and makeup prep step. The texture creates a smooth base that helps foundation glide on more evenly, while the skincare ingredients support overall radiance.

My Makeup Artist Tips for Wearing SPF Under Makeup

1. Apply SPF as the final skincare step

After your moisturiser, apply your SPF and allow it to absorb for around 5 minutes before starting makeup. This helps create a smoother base and prevents products from pilling.

2. Use it as your primer

With a formula that combines SPF and primer benefits, you can often skip an additional primer step. This keeps the skin looking fresh and prevents layering too many products.

3. Apply foundation with a light hand

When skin is properly prepped and protected, you often need less base makeup. I like to start with sheer layers and build coverage only where needed.

4. Let the skin show through

A radiant SPF base creates a natural luminosity that enhances makeup. I often use lighter coverage products on top so the skin still looks fresh and healthy.

How to Reapply SPF Without Ruining Your Makeup

Reapplying SPF throughout the day is one of the biggest challenges when you’re wearing makeup. Luckily, there are a few easy ways to keep your skin protected without disrupting your look

1. Use a makeup sponge or brush

Gently press a small amount of SPF onto the skin using a damp sponge. Pressing rather than rubbing helps maintain your foundation.

2. Focus on high - exposure areas

Reapply to the areas that receive the most sun first-the tops of the cheekbones, nose, forehead and temples.

3. Use light layers

Thin layers blend more seamlessly over makeup and avoid disturbing your base.

4. Top up during natural breaks in the day

Reapply before heading outside for lunch, during your afternoon coffee break or before commuting home.

Choosing the Right Formula for Your Skin

Fade Out’s SPF range offers two options depending on your skin goals.

Both formulas help simplify your routine by combining sun protection, skincare and makeup prep in one step.

The Secret to Better Makeup Is Great Skin

One thing I’ve learned over years of working in beauty is that great makeup always starts with great skin preparation. Daily SPF is one of the simplest but most powerful ways to protect your complexion and maintain that healthy-looking glow over time. When your skin is protected and well cared for, makeup becomes easier, lighter and more effortless, which is exactly what we all want from our beauty routine.
